Advice for a Soccer Punter

I discussed the different approaches used when betting on soccer matches and actually any other event. So my first advice is to stick to the objective approach. Whatever happens don’t bet just for the sake of it. Always make sure the odds are in your favor before placing a wager. Of course you can never be sure that your bet will always win but by ensuring the the odds, according to your analysis, is acceptable or favorable then you significantly decrease then chance of losing money as compared to betting without any data to back your selection.

As mentioned above even after taking the most care in making your pick things can still go your way. In reality there are no “sure things”. there will always be a chance for an “upset”. So don’t ever bet more than you can afford to lose on a single match because an “upset” will surely more than just upset you.

With the topic of betting more than you can mentioned another advice that goes for punters of all types is to manage your bankroll wisely. I’ve written about bankroll management before and as always I’ve said that you need to set a maximum loss limit. In soccer betting it’s just the same but this time you need to set a limit for the ENTIRE SEASON. For each match you bet on make sure the amount you bet is not so large as to compromise the rest of your “budget” for the season. If get tempted to it all or most of your bankroll in one match then lose don’t adjust your bankroll. Sit the season out and remember your lesson.

Learn how to analyze things. Ok, I said you need to use the objective approach but you can’t do that unless you know what to analyze and how to do it. So what can you analyze as a soccer punter. You can analyze factors to come up with your pick according to team, match, league, and odds. I’ll do a more in depth post on analysis since this is really the backbone of a good punter.

To be able to analyze teams, matches, leagues, and odds though you’ll need to keep records. The records you keep should be very accurate and complete. The records you keep will depend on the selection criteria you choose.

Do not bet in the first several matches at the start of the season. Wait until after each team has played several games so you’ll have enough data recorded about each team with which to analyze.

Once you’ve decided on a game plan or selection criteria stick to it. If you do lose a bet analyse what happened and while still sticking to your game plan adjust your selections according to what your most recent analysis tells you. And when you have decided on a particular selection after much analysis don’t waver. Note though that I said much analysis. If you know that you did not give it enough thought then do not place that bet, especially if new developments arise.
