Roulette Basics - California Roulette

The third type of roulette is called the California roulette. This game is obviously played in california but what makes the game unique is that it makes use of cards to help partially determine the outcome of the game. Different casinos, however, still have their own versions of the California roulette. Let me elaborate on two ways cards are used when playing the game.

In Pala the roulette wheel is quite unique in that the wheel has no numbers but instead has 38 slots of 4 colors. The color distribution is as follows: 12 red slots, 12 white slots, 12 blue slots, and 2 green slots. To bet on numbers a 38 card deck is used with the values of the cards correspoding to the usual values found on an American roulette wheel or a double-zero wheel. Before spinning the wheel the dealer deals four cards and places each on colored regions of the roulette table with one card for each color found on the wheel. The dealer then spins the wheel. The ball will of course stop on just one colored slot and the color of that slot will determine which card will be flipped over. The house edge for this type of roulette game is VERY high, unlike the very low house edge of the American and European roulette. The house edge is a whopping 23.55%, almost a hundred times riskier than the European roulette.

Another California roulette played in Barona is not so weird since it uses a roulette wheel with numbered slots. The wheel, however, is still unlike standard wheels with only 36 slots numbered 1 to 36. As in all California roulette games a deck of cards is used but this time with 37 cards in the deck. The value of each card on the deck corresponds to the values of found on a European wheel or a single-zero wheel. In this version of California roulette only three cards are dealt by the dealer. The dealer places each card on three table regions labelled “1-12″, “13-24″ and “25-36″. The dealer then spins the wheel and the number the ball drops in will determine not the winning bet but only the card that will be flipped over. The dealer then flips over the card corresponding to the range of the number the ball fell in and the number on the card will indicate the winning bets.

As you see California roulette games are not favorable to the players. So if you are interested in playing roulette California is definitely not the place to go.  European roulette has the lowest house edge due to its single-zero wheel. But if you are in USA have no plans of going to Europe you can also find single-zero wheels in US mostly in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Single-zero roulette games in US however usually have much higher minumums and are commonly played in high roller rooms where table minimums can be as high as $100.
